COE puts the country on alert for the rains from Sandy
SD. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) declared a yellow alert for one area and a green alert for the whole country, and they ordered preventive evacuations, as preventive measures due to the tropical storm Sandy that is threatening to become a hurricane.

Although the path of the storm indicates that it will pass to the west of Cuba, and yesterday it was located some 475 kilometers to the south of Jamaica, the width of its cloud cover will affect the entire island, most of all, the southwest region.

Gloria Ceballos, the director of the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) said that Sandy will bring considerable rainfall from yesterday night and until next Friday, with the aggravating circumstance that it Is moving slowly, with a speed of just 6 kph. Ceballos estimated that the rains could reach as much as 100 millimeters/4 inches.

"Another situation that we have is that October is a very rainy month for the Caribbean shoreline, so therefore we have saturated soils that the rainfall numbers that we expect, are going to create flooding very quickly," she commented.

The COE issued a yellow alert for Azua, Barahona, Pedernales, Bahoruco, San Juan, Elías Piña, Independencia, Dajabon, Montecristi, Santiago Rodríguez, Ocoa, San Cristóbal, Mao y Baní. The other provinces remain under a green alert. As part of the measures taken yesterday, the COE ordered the members of the National Police and the Armed Forced to return to their barracks.
