Chief Justice calls for unity against violence

SANTO DOMINGO. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) and of the Council of the Judicial Power, Mariano German Mejia, called for the union of all the sectors against violence as a way to insure the creation of a climate of peace.

The magistrate said that peace means the denial of violence.

"As a citizen I always worry, as a jurist I also worry, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice then I only meditate. What can we do in order to reduce violence?"

"When you talk about a crusade, this means the unity of all of the Dominican sectors."

German Mejia said that all of the sectors should reach a point "were we all are alike."

Likewise, he proclaimed that the same feeling should be produced: "where we want the same thing and were we all work for the same thing."

He sees as valid the complaints and the reclamations of the people who want a solution to be found for the issue of violence.

"What is needed is the sole and unanimous will of all of the sectors in order to contribute to the creation of the necessary peace."

The Chief Justice of the highest court said that the case cannot be seen with particular interests but rather as a whole.

Regarding the Penal Process Code, he said that it needs some modifications, but the technicians should get together with the objective of determining the points that need to be kept and those that need to be changed.

German Mejia spoke in these terms as he was interviewed during the opening of the "Season of French Law and Justice 2013", sponsored by the French Embassy, the National Judiciary School and the Alianza Frances.

Regarding the case of the Bahia de las Aguilas ( Eagles Bay), German refrained from giving an opinion regarding the outcome that this should have in the courts. Nevertheless, he believes that it is important for justice to prevail.

He stressed that even the procedural violence is bad, so that the process should continue with the speed necessary, but with the serenity with which Justice is always given. "Therefore there are two things needed: rapidity and tranquility."

The ambassadress

In the opening of the "Season of French Law and Justice 2013" the ambassadress from France, Blandine Kreiss, said that gender violence is the most common and serious violence of a person's fundamental rights in the entire world.

She explained that the Convention of the European Council for the Preventions and Fight against Gender Violence defines this violence as a violation of human rights and a form of discrimination.
