Tourism Police arrive in Santiago

The agents will patrol the historical city center and other areas of the Ciudad Corazon

SANTIAGO. Forty agents from the Tourism Police were integrated yesterday in the patrols in the historical center and other places in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros in order to protect both local and foreign visitors.

The new agents were presented during an act on the esplanade of the historical San Luis Fort, where they also inaugurated the offices of the Supervisor for the Central Cibao of this police unit.

The central speech of the activity was given by the director of the Tourism Police, General Jose Manuel Frias Rodriguez, who said that the initiative will contribute to increase the flow of foreign tourists in the city.

"The agents will also help to increase the number of local tourists and bolster the confidence of local and international businessmen and investors," he said.

In addition, the regional director of Tourism, Rafaela Joaquin, and the executive director of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Santiago, Jose Gregorio Sanchez addressed the audience.

At the present time, Santiago offers 1,100 hotel rooms and is visited each year by 100,000 foreign tourists, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

The principle attractions are the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration; the Plaza de la Cultura, the Santiago Apostol Cathedral, the Centro Leon, the San Luis Fort, the ruins of Old Santiago and the Historic Archives.
