Minors rescued from working in rice fields

SD. The Ministry of Labor reported yesterday that they rescued 24 minors that were working in the rice fields of the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua).

According to a press release, the technical unit of the Fight against Child Labor handed out citations to the owners of the rice farms where the minors were removed. The personnel from the ministry worked together with the personnel from the local representatives of the Ministry of Labor in the province.

They were able to confirm that the boys, whose ages varied from 6 to 17, are registered in school, but they were being used illegally during their vacations in order to carry out work that puts their health at risk given the high levels of pesticides that are used on the crop.

The Minister of Labor, Francisco Dominguez Brito, regretted that the advances achieved in the area of eradicating child labor over recent months, are hindered by unscrupulous persons that without any kind of human sensibility take advantage of boys and girls to exploit them.

"It is regrettable that many of these minors, which have now been withdrawn from the work and entered into classrooms through a process of public awareness with the parents and tutors, are once again exposed to exploitation against which we will apply the full force of the law," said Dominguez.
