The number of those that earn the most grew by 32,459 in the first half

52.6% of workers earn less than RD$10,000 a month
SANTO DOMINGO. While they are discussing the Law of Public Salaries in the National Congress, which increases the payroll of the state bureaucracy with high salaries, 53.6% of the Dominican workers earn less than RD$10,000 a month.

According to information from the Treasury Department of the Social Security program, as of June of this year the Social Security system had registered 1,390,286 workers, of which 745,528 earned salaries that were between 0 and RD$10,000.

Those workers numbered 738,365 in the first semester last year, so that for the same period of 2012, there was a 1.24% increase, equal to 9,163 employees more, according to the data.

The employees that earned between RD$10,000 and RD$15,000 represented in the first six months of this year some237,540 workers and those are 22,225 more than the same period last year, which is a 10.32% change.

The 237,540 employees that there were as of June of this year, represent 17% of the total number of employees with salaries of less than RD$15,000 and more than RD$10,000.

Likewise, those that earn between RD$15,001 and RD$20,000 are some 115,977 employees and in relation to the first semester of 2011, these grew by 2.31%, which is to say 2,614 workers. The employees in this scale are 8.3% of the total number of employees, which is 1.3 million.

The workers that earn between RD$20,001 and RD$25,000 are some 73,829 and with respect to the first semester of the previous year, fell by 4.17%, a loss of 3,216. The employees in this salary range make up 5.3% of the total.

And those that earn more than RD$25,000 represent 217,412 employees, some 32,459 more than in the first semester of 2011, which represents the greatest variation of some 32,459 employees more, equal to 17.55%. These 217,412 workers represent 15.6% of the total of 1.3 million.

Companies

According to the data from the Social Security treasury office, the total number of companies registered in the first semester increased by 3,174, going from 45,720 on June 30, 2011, to 48,894 on 30 June of this year, a 6.94% change.

The companies which grew the most were micro- and small companies that have between 1 and 15 employees, which totaled 36,854 in the first semester last year and 39,567 during the same period this year. Companies with between 16 and 50 employees numbered 6,230.

Poverty and salaries

According to the economist Miguel Ceara Hatton, since the average size of the Dominican families is made up of 3.7 members, the family income that is below RD$16,000 a month is considered to be poor and if it is below RD$7.086 it is in extreme poverty. He said that as of June of this year, the average income of the poor was RD$4,324 per person and the income of extreme poverty, that is to say which only covers food, was RD$1,915. The salary of army and police recruits is RD$5,000.
