Young girl dies in Santiago with symptoms of dengue
SANTIAGO. A child of just 18 months, with symptoms of dengue, died in the Doctor Arturo Grullon Children's Hospital in Santiago. At the same time the Ministry of Public Health has reinforced the preventive measures in the Cibao Valley where there are reports of more than 70 persons with the disease.

The victim is Raidali de la Cruz, who lived in the El Paraiso sector of the town of Constanza. She was sick and in a clinic in that city, and then she was taken to the Juan Bosch Trauma Hospital in La Vega, and the later on transferred to the children's hospital in Santiago.

The director of the Dr. Arturo Grullon Hospital, Dr. Rosa Maria Morel, reported that the little girl arrives in a very serious condition, with high fever, low red blood cell count, and in a state of shock.

"The doctors and nurses did everything humanly possible to save the life of the little girl but unfortunately, she died," said the director.

Doctor Morel said that so far this year they have attended 200 children with dengue at the children's hospital and that at the present time there are 11 children hospitalized in the dengue unit of the center, where they are administered different medicines.

Over the last few weeks, some 45 patients, mostly from the Northwest Line (Mao, Montecristi, Dajabon) and other towns of the Cibao have been hospitalized with symptoms of dengue in different health centers of Santiago, which has put the health officials of Public Health on alert.

The North Regional Office of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance sent a team of epidemiologists to the town of Esperanza where an outbreak of the disease has been reported.

Community organizations of that town attribute the situation to the lack of water which affects many of the barrios of the town, which forces the population to store water in tanks, which become breeding grounds for the mosquito that transmits dengue. As of now there have been 455 cases reported in the whole country, according to the latest report from Public Health.
