The COE declares a green alert for the whole country

Tropical Storm Isaac will affect the Southwest
SD. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) declared yesterday a green alert as a preventive step for the entire national territory because of the forecasts that Tropical Storm Isaac will pass by the Southof the country over the Caribbean Sea around Friday morning and its rains could affect all of our territory.

The assistance agency called upon the population to follow developments and the progress of the storm by the media. The storm will begin to bring rains tomorrow night and the center at 8:00 in the morning on Friday will be close to the Southwest, so that the most affected places will be the provinces in that region.

The path of the storm was reported by the head of the COE, General Juan Manuel Mendez and the director of the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) Gloria Ceballos, during a press conference in the Orlando Martinez Hall of the Presidential Palace.

Ceballos said that the ONAMET and the COE met yesterday in order to coordinate the preventive actions needed because of the system passing so close to Dominican territory.

"The precipitation models are indicating that we could have along the Caribbean coastline accumulations of about 150 millimeters, and more in some places in the national territory," said the Onamet director.

In the meantime, General Mendez said that the Armed Forces are preparing their joint commands, and that Civil Defense, the Red Cross, the Fire departments; Public Health and the National Police have all issued their emergency orders.

"Coordination had been made with the Economic Kitchens and the Presidential Social Plan in case that some persons are affected, we can take food and supplies to the places that are most affected," he said.

The COE director called on the population to be calm, but attentive to the development and evolution of this storm. He said that the agency would issue new alerts as the storm develops.

Mendez said that today at 11:00 a.m. the COE and Onamet would report on new measures that will be put into effect all over the country.

The dams and reservoirs

In relation to the risks of flooding, Gloria Ceballos indicated that the dams are able to accept large accumulations of rainfall which Isaac will bring, and in case that the system continues to evolve and cause higher than expected values of rainfall, they will take the emergency measures needed for these cases. The storm could bring winds of up to 80 kilometer per hour.

Taking part in the press conference besides Roberto Rodriguez Marchena, the Presidential spokesperson, were the Civil Defense director Luis A. Luna Paulino, Juan Rodriguez from the Ministry of Public Health and Gustavo Lora from the Red Cross.
