SANTO DOMINGO. In what could be the start of a solution to the crisis in the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado met yesterday with the secretary general, Orlando Jorge Mera, in what was called by both men a meeting to lay out an institutional agenda.
"Miguel is the party president, and I am the secretary general." "This should not be seen as a look backwards, but more importantly as a look forward," stressed Jorge Mera in talking about the meeting.
He said that evidently there is interest in producing a meeting between all of the PRD.
"We are here in order to tell the rank and file and the party leaders that the directors of the party are working to achieve a shared agenda," he noted.
Regarding this aspect, Vargas Maldonado said that they dealt with some fundamental issues of the PRD, such as the case of watchful opposition which they will carry out with respect to the new PLD administration, as well as issues with the functioning of the party.
"In this new meeting we have tried to work together with the idea of putting the party organizations to work and we are happy to do this with Orlando," he said.
Both men indicated that this was just a first meeting, since Vargas Maldonado will leave the country tomorrow, Friday.
Hipolito's sector has an opinion
During the afternoon, the president of the sector of the PRD which is led by Hipolito Mejia, Andres Bautista, said that the meeting was good and he indicated that he supports the initiative with the idea of arriving at the solution to the crisis through the celebration of the convention next year.
He reported that a commission headed by Jorge Mera and composed of Tony Peña Guaba and Cesar Cedeño will provide monitoring of the process.
Bautista offered his statements in a press conference in which besides Jorge Mera, and Peña Guaba, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, Luis Abinader and Janet Camilo were also present.
Alemany makes it clear
The National Secretary for Communications of the PRD, Wilfredo Alemany, made it clear last night that the meeting between Miguel Vargas and Orlando Jorge Mera was strictly bound by their institutional roles as president and secretary general.
"As both men have made clear in the press, and which was also picked up by the television news shows in the afternoon, and on the Internet, at no time did they deal with any issue that was not of an institutional nature. This is also covered in the invitation which was written by the party president and was also accepted in writing by the secretary general," said Alemany.
He underlined most carefully that Miguel Vargas answered a question from the reporters that said during the private meeting at no time did they talk about group issues, which was collaborated by Jorge Mera.
