Danilo congratulates farmers on their day

SANTO DOMINGO. In a message published for the Day of the Farmer, the President said that "the down-to-earth and humble lives of our country folk, their hard labor and desire to improve their lot, serve as inspiration for the Dominican government."

He added that for these reasons he has placed among the top priorities the assistance provided to rural farmers, in order to provide them with the support that they need, so that they can revive our fields and supply our little markets.

"We need to rescue the Dominican countryside, restart that love for the earth with eyes focused on a future which looks full of optimism and opportunities," says the message from the Chief of State to the farmers.

On the Day of the Farmer, agricultural producers from the province of Espaillat will present today several projects valued at RD$125 million to President Danilo Medina. These include the renovation of plantain farms, financing for egg producers and the payment of RD$212 million to poultry producers and finally, the creation of a rotating fund of RD$600 million for improving the competitiveness of the sector.

According to the details of the proposals, the renewal of the plantain fields will require an investment of RD$50 million; the financing of the egg producers RD$100 million at 5% yearly interest, while the payment of the RD$212 million debt was for the purchase of poultry that was bought from the farmers by the last administration.

In addition they suggest that the funds resulting from the import of farm supplies be specialized and focused on the financing of the development of the competitive capacity of the local farm sector.

This was the suggestion by Wilfredo Cabrera, of the Egg Producers Association (AprohuevoRD), Jose Pichardo, of the National Association of Producers of Laying Hens (Asonaprop) and Rafa Santos, from the Farm Producers.
