Quisqueya Electricity Generation Plant inaugurated; it will provide 430 megawatts

Investment in complex reached RD$29.0 billion

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS. President Danilo Medina headed yesterday the inauguration of the Quisqueya Electricity Generation Plant, located in the town of the same name and the largest in the county. The complex took an investment by Barrick Pueblo Viejo and EGEHaina of some RD$29 billion.

The energy park is composed of the Quisqueya I and Quisqueya II generators. Both are equipped from the factory with a system that can operate with either natural gas or liquid fuels.

The Chief of State pushed the start-up button of the Quisqueya complex to formally inaugurate the project. The blessing was given by Monsignor Francisco Ozoria Acosta, the bishop of the Dioceses of San Pedro.

The investment represents 27% of the total amount invested in energy over the past 13 years, and it is the largest ever made in the energy sector in the Dominican Republic, said Manuel Rocha, the president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo.

In the initial speech of the ceremony, he talked about his satisfaction at being a witness to the start-up of the generation facility, stressing that the size of the investment sets a precedent in the energy sector.

For his part, Eddy Gomez, Operations Manager of Quisqueya, explained how the generator works during a tour of the facility with the President and executives of the ownership companies.

The new generators will offer electricity service to the national system.

In addition, he added, Quisqueya will establish the basis for the development of an energy platform with the highest standards of safety and technology.

"Quisqueya I has a transmission line constructed to provide the energy that will be used in our mining operation in Pueblo Viejo, and at the same time it will have the ability to supply excess energy to the National Interconnected Electricity System," said Manuel Rocha, the president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo.

For his part, Edgar Pichardo, the president of EGEHaina, noted that this was transcendental milestone for the electric sector and he announced that the company is ready to begin the construction of Quisqueya III.

"The Quisqueya generators will supply 20% of the peak demand and 30% of the base demand," explained Edgar Pichardo as he stressed that these generators "will contribute to a reduction of more than 20% of the average price on the wholesale market for electricity, known as "spot".

In the meantime, Ruben Bichara, the executive vice-president of the Dominican Corporation of State-owned Electricity Enterprises (CDEEE), indicated that the change in the fuel matrix and the increase in the supply of electricity are the basis for a solution to the energy problem. He said that the joint actions of the public and private sectors constitute a guarantee for this job.

Characteristics of the facility

The Quisqueya Energy Plant has a transmission line of 140 and 396 steel towers which go from San Pedro de Macoris to Piedra Blanca, in the province of Monsignor Nouel. With an installed capacity of 430 megawatts, the generators have the capacity to supply 20% of the peak demand and 30% of the normal demand. Edgar Pichardo, the president o EGEHaina, said during the activity that they are evaluating with the government the construction of Quisqueya III.
