Dominican bishops hope they declare Loma Miranda a national park
SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican bishops argued yesterday for Loma Miranda, located between the provinces of La Vega and Monsignor Nouel, be declared a national park through a law.

In their Message, "The Value of the Political Life", motivated by the 170 anniversary of the National Independence (which will be celebrated next Thursday, 27 February), The Dominican Conference of Bishops established their position regarding the area, which remains in the public debate given the possibility that the Falcondo Xstrata enterprise might obtain the permits from the Ministry of the Environment to exploit its minerals.

In this sense, they said that it is "very important to have the participation and the support of all of the citizens in the social movements and demands, creating flows of solidarity to demand from the administrators of the state, a clean handling in the negotiations of the people's assets and to the benefit of the nation." They recalled that in the country there are already positive experiences with popular struggles, such as the case of the 4% of GDP for education, the cement factory in the Haitises, the revision of the Barrick Gold contract and the very defense that people have made of Loma Miranda.

It is not the first time that the bishops call for a transparent handling of the nation's assets. In their statement of last year at the same time, the called on the officials to act "with sufficient political will in order to defend the national patrimony."

Law of Parties is urgent

Politics is at the center of this Message. The prelates explained that they were taking advantage of the opportunity of the moment, that "we are not very conditioned by emotions and the passion that the political activism creates at election time," in order to reflect on the importance and the essence of politics as a fundamental science for the development and construction of social peace.

They feel that the approval of the law of parties is "urgent" in order to put to one side the issue of patronage. Likewise, they called on the faithful and the population in general to "participate actively in the political life, in the civic and community life in an honest and transparent manner."

"Today like never before we need politicians with a vocation...that return to the essence of Politics as a science for the common good, that think more in the welfare of the nation and not so much in the power or the goods that this can provide," the clerics emphasized, after recalling that the temptation to take personal advantage of the service of the public power has been a recurring fact among the politicians that have governed during the last 50 years.

They say that they understand that participating in politics in not only a right, it is a duty.

National project

Within the framework of this issue, the clerics suggested the need for the const4ruction of a national project which is agreed upon by all of the political parties and the powers that be in the country, which prioritizes the elements that best contribute to the progress and social peace.

Criticism of Justice system

The bishops said that the Dominican justice system is "unjust, rigged, and controlled by the power of patronage;" "where the impunity is there is there alive and without even bothering with appearances; where the exhibition of the accumulated spoils is shown with no shame."

Defend the country

They called for the defense of the territorial integrity of the country. "This implies to have a sense of patriotism, of defense and care for the nation, without at any time violating or harming the rights of any citizen," they said.

Recognition of efforts

They also recognized some efforts of the government, especially in education. "The project "Quisqueya learns with you" is praiseworthy, and they said that the public expenditure "is getting a little bit of care" and the scourge of corruption is undergoing "some vigilance."

After the criticism that was generated by the manipulation of the joint photograph of the bishops, sent with the Pastoral Letter last 21 January (motivated by the Day of La Altagracia), in which a photograph of a bishop who was not present was Photoshopped, this time the bishops opted to sent the media individual 2 x 2 of each one of the members.
