Some 18,000 police will watch over Holy Week

SANTO DOMINGO. The list is long: not allowing drivers to drive at high speed; keep freight trucks off the roads from Thursday until Sunday; prevent the transport of persons in open vehicles; watch over the sale of alcoholic beverages; the use of knives, and firearms as well as drug distribution on the beaches.

These and others were the instructions given to the 18,000 police agents by the Chief of the National Police, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo. These men and women will be spread out on highways, rivers, beaches around the country for the purpose of preventing incidents and traffic accidents this Holy Week.

"An increased force of members of the National Police towards the principle bathing sites of the Dominican Republic in order to prevent intoxication, fights, drug distribution and other types of incidents," he said as he was questioned by reporters regarding the actions of the Police during the long holiday weekend.

Safekeeping of homes

Castro Castillo called upon the population to take the necessary security measures in order to keep their houses from being targeted by thieves.

"The National Police are going to keep the same number of agents that Greater Santo Domingo and the cities have now, doing preventive work, in order to prevent assaults and robberies. But the families that are on the move should take measures not to leave their homes unsecured."
