COE reports 25 fatalities and 741 injured in Holy Week
SANTO DOMINGO. As of noon yesterday, according to the third bulletin from the Center of Emergency Operations (COE), during the Holy Week holidays 25 persons perished. There was one drowning and 24 persons died in traffic accidents.

According to the statistics from the assistance agency, there were 356 accidents registered so far, with 587 persons affected. Of the 24 deaths in traffic accidents, 15 involved motorcycles, eight light vehicles and one person was hit by a vehicle.

Of the total accidents registered, 195 involved motorcycles, 160 involved light vehicles, and one heavy vehicle.

According to the numbers from the COE, over the weekend some 1.2 million persons traveled over the highways and expressways of the country. In addition, there was an estimated 19% increase in traffic at airports and seaports of the country, in relation to last year.

Regarding those injured during the Holy Week holidays, the COE said that in addition to the 587 injured by traffic accidents, there were 142 persons suffering from alcoholic intoxications, and 12 from food poisoning. This year, the report includes the 743 persons that received medical assistance.

The report indicated that the Metropolitan Transit Authority(AMET), stopped 77 vehicles for excess speeds using radar guns, they detained 295 heavy vehicles for using the roads without the required permits, another 78 because they were using the left lane, as well as 265 light vehicles, 2,696 motorcyclists for driving without their helmets. The AMET submitted 210 persons to breathalyzer tests and found 38 positive results.

At the same time, the Military and Police Commission of the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) offered more than 1,300 assists to persons along the roads and highways. The institutions had the use of 125 units composed of 110 highway patrol units and 15 mobile workshops that provided service along the roads in different points around the country.

Highway escorts

From early in the afternoon yesterday, the AMET began 21 highway escort processes where they imposed speed restrictions in order to avoid accidents due to excess speeds during the return of vacationers. The AMET director, General Juan Geronimo Brown Perez, reported that for the "Safe Return of Vacationers", they put together seven escorts on the Las Americas Highway, from the East; ten on the Duarte Highway, for those returning from the Cibao, and four on the Sanchez Highway for those coming from the South. Motorized units from the National Police and the AMET led long lines of vehicles on these highways in order to guarantee a safe arrival.
