Murder of women shows increase in first half in DR

SANTO DOMINGO. The murders of women which occurred in the first half of the year numbered 45, which is 18 more than the 37 which occurred in the first half of 2013.

This was revealed in a report released during a press conference by the Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, who considered what happened in the first half of the year to be a "stain" on the process of prevention of women's deaths.

The official recalled that last year there was the lowest rate in the last ten years.

"It was an unprecedented success for us that we were able to achieve that goal."

Nonetheless, he said that the critical news is that there is a tendency to decrease, "which was what we were trying for, it broke, and what it has shown us is the tendency to go up, which is very worrisome."

He said that he felt that it was vital to redouble the prevention efforts to counter the tendency.

"We still have the same situation, nearly 100% of the women that are killed, with some exceptions, have never filed a complaint in the penal system of the Dominican Republic."
