Teacher certification will go into effect

SANTO DOMINGO. Starting with the next school year, the Ministry of Education will begin to apply the professional and teaching performance standards needed for the certification and the development of the education career, which seeks to elevate the quality of the system.

The standards will be applied from the moment of the induction of the candidates for teachers, with the admission tests. They will also install a probationary year for new entries and performance evaluations for those that are already in the system. This last point will permit the Ministry to certify the professionalism and competence of the teachers. Those that can make the jump will also see their income levels rise.

The evaluation of the teaching performance is one of the points agreed upon in the Education Pact and precisely, the issue was dealt with yesterday during the seminar "Education Pact, standards, accreditation and development of the teaching career," held at the main campus of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

"We want the persons to see the teaching career as an opportunity to serve, but also to have a career, the remain in something that is going to be based on standards and that is going to progressively improve," said Saturnino de los Santos, the Deputy Minister of Teaching Management at the Ministry, who is in charge of working up the document.

He recalled that the standards were approved this year by the National Education Council, the controlling body of the system.
