Sector of HM and Luis has nothing to do in convention; security is reinforced
SANTO DOMINGO. In the national house of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) they have already increased the security measures in search of controlling the entrance of persons who what to go into the building, where they are sending out the supplies for the XXX Ordinary Convention next Sunday. The ballots will be five in total and divided into A, the presidential level; B for the secretary general; C for the secretary of organization; D, for the vice-presidents and E for the deputy Secretaries Generals.

Some eight thousand persons will work in the convention, and the voter rolls include 538.478 members of the rank and file that will vote at 341 polling stations.

The elections will choose 32 national vice presidents, and 32 deputy secretaries general, which together with the president, secretary general and secretary of organization make up 67 positions.

There are four candidates for the presidency, three for secretary general, four for the national secretary for organization, 103 candidates for deputy secretary general, a total of 244 candidates.

The Superior Electoral Tribunal convened for today at 9:00 a.m. a hearing in which they would listen to arguments of the appeal filed by the presidential candidate for the PRD, Guido Gomez Mazara, against the voting hours established by the commission which are from 7:00 a.m until 3:00 in the afternoon.

PRM steps away

The president of the Revolutionary Majority Party (PRM), Andres Bautista, stressed that this group defined some time ago its position with regard to the internal elections of the PRD, which they consider to be "a farce".

"Some time ago we said that what Mr. Vargas is trying to do is a farce, and therefore we have nothing to do in this event", he underlined.

For his part, the executive director of the PRM, Jesus Vasquez Martinez, commented that "in the Dominican Party it is difficult to win elections."

The spokesman for former President Hipolito Mejia, Hector Guzman, reiterated that they would not participate in the elections and that the former President would travel to China next Sunday as part of a 10 day trip.

In the meantime, this weekend the aspiring presidential candidate, Luis Abinader, and Andres Bautista, will travel to Montevideo, Uruguay, to represent the PRM at a seminar-meeting which was convened by the Progressive Alliance, a worldwide network of political parties tied to socialism, to social democracy, labor movements and diverse progressive currents on the five continents.

Gomez calls for order

The aspiring candidate for the PRD presidency, Guido Gomez Mazara, called on the PRD rank and file of the country, and of the sectional branches to go massively to the elections next Sunday and vote in an orderly fashion, "without being provoked, avoiding incidents and defending the vote with firmness."

He said that in spite of what the PRD president has done to convert the voting rolls into a "miniature", the PRD members will go to exercise their right to vote, in order to get the party out of the lethargy which in his opinion is affecting the party.

He said that Miguel Vargas does not want the PRD rank and file to take part and he only wants his own followers to go and vote, in order to be able to put together a "big package and caricature" of a convention.

He said that with the help of God and the votes of the PRD militancy, he will be the next president of the party, so that the PRD can recover the peace, the democracy and its harmony."

Rejection of the logo

The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) filed suit before the Central Electoral Board (JCE) rejecting the logo and the name that were requested for changing the Dominican Social Alliance to the Revolutionary Majority Party (PRM) it was learned yesterday.

They allege that the logo of the PRM is the signal that the PRD members use to identify themselves, a closed fist with the index finger raised. They also allege that there are three parties already recognized with the name "Revolutionary", such as the Social Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRSD), and the Independent Revolutionary Party (PRI).
