Private schools are asked to have extended school day

SANTO DOMINGO. "If the private schools do no enter into the Extended School Day, we have no guarantee that it is going to work".

The announcement is by Jose Ramon Rodriguez, the education consultant of the Cooperative Association for Investment and Employment (Coop Aspire), who explained that the private sector represents 25% of the school age population of the country, and that the quality of the teaching that is supposed to occur in the eight hours a day of classes, will not reach this sector.

During a conference entitled The Extended School Day: hope and challenges of private education, which was attended by dozens of directors of private schools, recommended that the Government invest in the infrastructure of the private schools so that they can implement the initiative.

"The private sector has been the only part that has guaranteed five days of classes in a permanent fashion. If we do not get into the extended session, there is a sector of the population that is not going to receive this quality," he stated.

Rodriguez said that the startup of the Extended School Day in a "well intentioned" effort by President Danilo Medina, which will have success only if the private schools are included.

It is an opportunity

For the general manager of Coop Aspire, Gerardo Orozco, the directors of private schools should see the Extended School Day as an opportunity, not as a threat.
