National Police: 80 agents killed and one year and one month

SANTO DOMINGO. The spokesman for the National Police, Colonel Jacobo Mateo Moquete, responded to the worries voiced by Amnesty International, which say that in this country there has been an increase in deaths at the hands of the police, calling attention to the fact that in the last year some 80 police agents have died, without "anybody mourning, and it is not true that the police have to let themselves be killed."

Mateo Moquete said that "the Dominican police are also human beings and they have rights; when the criminals shoot at the members of the National Police, the Police are going to defend themselves." "There have been 80 members of the police force killed in one year at the hands of the criminals," said the spokesman

In this context, he said that the Dominican criminal element shows inself to be irrespective of authority, so that it is necessary for the police agents to defend themselves. "The National Police in each case has acted in defense of itself because there is a disrespectful criminal, a defiant criminal. And the members of the police will defend themselves and they have to defend themselves."

He said that together with the deaths of the policemen, it is necessary to add the number of common citizens that die at the hands of the criminals in addition to the agents that have died at the very beginning of their professional careers. "The members of the National Police have families. Why don't they ask me about this corporal that they killed two weeks ago that nobody remembers. Nobody emphasizes. A young man with a degree in economics left the family with orphans."
