Alburquerque: The PLD does not have the votes to permit reelection
SD. The former Vice President of the Republic, Rafael Alburquerque, considered the fact that the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) does not have a sufficient number of legislators to modify the Constitution and allow for reelection is the major obstacle for the re-nomination of President Danilo Medina.

"The principle obstacle for this re-- nomination is the constitutional reform which is going to require the vote of two thirds of the National Congress," explained Albuquerque in an interview with the Diario Libre.

The member of the PLD Political Committee indicated that in order to modify the Constitution and permit the consecutive reelection of Medina, they not only need the votes of their party, but also an important number of deputies from the opposition.

Alburquerque said that he understands the petitions from outside the party and by some officials who are members of the Central Committee and the Political Committee, due to the fact that Medina has fulfilled two years of his term, and has done a satisfactory job for the people.

"Given the extraordinary work that the Licentiate Danilo Medina has been doing, it is logical that diverse sectors both inside of the party as well as outside, request his re - nomination," he said.

He said that another point against a consecutive reelection is the fact that President Medina has said on several occasions that he will end his term of office on 16 August 2016. He discarded the possibility that the movements for reelection that have appeared are affecting the PLD unity or that conflicts will arise between sectors or party leaders.

The winds are blowing hard

Asked the question about how the preparations for launching a possible candidacy of former President of the Republic, Leonel Fernandez, are going, Alburquerque pointed out that the winds are "always blowing hard."

In the last few weeks there has been a wave of movements and statements by officials close to the President in favor of modifying the Constitution in order to remove the impediment which keeps him from presenting himself once again as the PLD candidate.
