Public Health invests US $8 million in programs against tuberculosis

They presented rules for the prevention and control of the disease

SANTO DOMINGO. The Ministry of Public Health ordered a US $8 million investment this year to attend more than 2000 tuberculosis patients who receive free medical attention and other treatments at 1561 centers distributed around the country.

This was reported yesterday by the Minister of Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo Nuñez, who said that the resources cover 85% of the money the program needs to reach a 92% reduction of the cases that are found in order to comply with the goals set by the Objectives of the Millennium in relation to the elimination of tuberculosis.

The patients received treatment on different levels and, according to the Minister, the incidence of cases was reduced from 62 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 57 cases.

In 2012, 4438 cases of tuberculosis were registered. These were diagnosed and placed in treatment according to the authorities from Public Health.

Hidalgo Nuñez spoke on the issue during the presentation of the Technical Regulations for the Prevention and the Control of Tuberculosis, which seeks to guarantee and regulate the actions for the prevention and control of tuberculosis in the country through the integrated attention in all of the National Health System.

He said that the approval of these regulations is a result of the active participation by the technical team and the health promoters that have the commitment and duty to assist the families in the communities with the capacity to detect any eventuality in the home.

"It is a government commitment to reduce tuberculosis more and more each day, the same as with other illnesses, and we have advanced a lot in these last two years, thanks to the placement of treatment that each patient requires opportunely, and that we offer without charge," by means of projects with local resources and international agencies he explained

At his side the person responsible for the National Program for Tuberculosis Control, Balkis Marcellino, said that the content of the regulations was prepared according to scientific advances and that both public and private entities took part in the preparation. She said the cooperation of the Ministry of Public Health provides the document with an integrated focus on the issue of tuberculosis.

Program

With the aim of achieving the goals of the Millennium Objectives which are to reduce the cases of tuberculosis detected by 92% in 2015, the National Program for Tuberculosis Control estimates that they need to find more than 30% of the cases that occur in the country.

Since last year the program has been carrying out a campaign to discover cases of tuberculosis.
