Dominican Republic has nearly half a million affected by chikungunya
Nevertheless, the Minister of Public Health says that cases are dropping

SD. With 13,336 new suspected cases of the chikungunya virus registered as of the 15th of this month for a total of 429,421, the Dominican Republic closes in on a half million persons affected by the disease.
Within this number, six fatalities have been notified, of which three were discarded and the others are under investigation.
Nevertheless, the Minister of Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo Nuñez, said that the incidence of the disease is maintaining a decreasing tendency in all the regions of the country over the last six weeks.
He attributes the decrease to the fact that they have visited more than 1,600,000 homes, where they have informed of the people about the disease, and taught them how to eliminate the sources of the breeding grounds for the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which is the vector.
At the level of the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that 33 countries and territories have reported 580,526 suspicious cases of chikungunya, including 32 fatalities.
In the region of the Caribbean, the PAHO has registered 28 cases of indigenous transmission.
The epidemiology report establishes that the provinces of the highest incidence during week 32 are Puerto Plata, with 1733; La Vega, with 1370; Santiago where there were 1210; Espaillat, 1217; and in the National District, 1315.
Hidalgo Nuñez said that the drop will continue over the coming weeks.
