Deputies approve projects on Loma Miranda
SANTO DOMINGO. The Chamber of Deputies declared last night the project which creates the Loma Miranda National Park to be urgent and approved it in two consecutive readings.

The legislative initiative was reintroduced by the PRD deputy for La Vega, Elpidio Infante and another eight legislators. This is the same project that was modified by a special commission of the Senate and rejected in the last legislature by the lower chamber.

The legislation was approved unanimously with 143 votes in favor and should now be approved in the Senate in order to become law.

The Plenary accepted a proposal from Deputy El[pidio Infante to declare the legislation to be urgent and approved the initiative in two consecutive readings.

Deputy Hugo Nuñez challenged the Senators to demonstrate their interest to have Loma Miranda declared a National Park by approving the legislation passed by the Chamber of Deputies.

Deputy Vinicio Castillo recalled the supposed errors which motivated that the lower chamber would reject this legislative proposal modified by the Senate, and warned that if it was approved as it was they might provide a way for the Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) to sue the Dominican state and demand damages for millions of pesos.

Sources of resources

The project establishes, among other things, that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources be authorized to increase by 10% the value to be paid for the granting of a license or environmental permit approved for a company, institution or person to have the right to explore or to exploit mining resources.
