SANTO DOMINGO. The Commanding General of the Army of the Dominican Republic (ERD), Maj. Gen. José Matos de la Cruz and the chief of the Police Maj. Gen. Manuel Castro Castillo agreed yesterday to increase the patrols in those areas that have been declared as vulnerable.

Matos de la Cruz explained that the actions will take effect immediately and will increase over the weekend.

"We are ready to help the Police with crime prevention, we are going to increase the actions in those cities and Barrios of the capital that have become vulnerable," he said.

The director of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces which operates within the Plan of Public Safety, explained that together with the National Police they will bring tranquility to the citizens.

He said that crime is controlled and that the Army, together with the Police will not allow it to advance; "we are taking actions, reinforcing areas, and carrying out all the measures necessary to protect the citizens," he said.

He underlined the fact that he will place at the disposition of the Police all the members of the Army that are necessary for preventive patrols in the Barrios and provinces of the country which have been classified as vulnerable.

"We have never withdrawn troops from the streets, to the contrary, we are going to reinforce them so that criminals and organized crime won't gain terrain in the Dominican Republic."

Among the points covered during the meeting between the Chief of Police and the Commanding General of the Dominican Army, are issues relating to the actions that are carried out by the Unified Joint Command, whose leadership corresponds at the present time to the ERD. This command is composed of the three institutions of the Armed the Forces and its commander is rotated every three months.

During the meeting they coordinated joint actions in different areas as well as the exchange of information of intelligence and operational support.

In a personal plane, Maj. Gen. Castro Castillo, said that he exchanged impressions regarding the different aspects related with the fight against crime and public safety.

The police chief was accompanied by generals Cesar Augusto Sena Rojas, Pablo Arturo Pujols, Neit Bautista, Pichardo Reynoso, Nelson Rosario, and Claudio Peguero, as well as Colonel Carlos V. Fernandez Valerio.

The aforementioned high ranking police officials are the heads of investigation, crime prevention, transportation, legal affairs, internal affairs, and anti-drugs, respectively.

Matos de la Cruz said "that they have everything under control, all the national territory, including the Duarte Highway." This important artery is one of the points that, in the last years, has been used by community leaders residing in nearby areas to hold demonstrations demanding their rights.
