With nine parties against and three in favor, ASD seeks to change name to PRM
SD. Nine of the 26 recognized political organizations opposed yesterday that change of the name of the Dominican Social Alliance for that of the Majority Revolutionary Party (PRM), in a hearing at the Central Electoral Board (J CE) in which they only were able to obtain the support of three parties.

The leading voice for rejection of this move was carried by the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), whose political delegate José Miguel Vasquez, together with spokesman Victor Gomez Casanova, stressed that the term "majority" is discriminatory, besides the fact that the logo of a fist with the thumb pointing up might lead to confusion in an election process.

They explained that the logo was used by important figures of the party in recent campaigns, persons such as the departed leader José Francisco Peña Gomez, and even the former presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia. They also opposed the typography and the blue and white colors of the proposed party.

Another opponent was the government's Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), whose political delegate Cesar Pina Toribio, argued that only the J CE can attribute the term "majority" each four years with the results of the elections.

"It is unreasonable that the Board permits the identification and registration like this for a party, to the prejudice of how the Dominican political system is organized," he stressed. Other parties that opposed the change where the Quisqueyano Christian Democrat (PQDC), the Alternative Democratic Movement (MO DA cause gaps the Dominican Workers Party (PTD), the Liberal Action Party (PAL), the Socialists Green Party (PASOVE), the Social Democrat Institutional Block (BIS) and the National Progressive Force (FNP), the last two claimed they had the rights to the color blue.

At the same time six parties decided to accept the dispositions adopted by the J CE regarding the request. These are the Social Christian Reformist party (PRSC), the Alternative Democratic Movement (MODA), the Social Democrat Revolutionary Party (PRSD), the National Unity Party (PUN), the Civic Renovation Party (PCR) and the Liberal Party of the Dominican Republic (PL RD). The Unity and Progress Independent Movement (MIUP) did not issue an opinion while representatives of the Dominicans for Change (DxC), the Independent Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Alliance For Democracy (APD) were not present.

The BIS, the Popular Christian Party (PPC) and the National Party of Veterans and Civilians (PNVC) asked for time in order to issue their conclusions.

The only parties in favor of the change and that did not present any opposition where the Dominican Humanist Party (PHD), the Institutional Democratic Party (BDI) and the Broad Front.

At the end of the hearing, the president of the JCE, Roberto Rosario, set a deadline of Monday, 8 September, for the parties to make their objections.

The evaluation

In its report, the Commission of Electoral Boards and Political Parties, which is chaired by JCE member Eddy Olivares, said that the ASD complied with all the legal requirements to change its name its insignias, its symbol, flag and motto.
