The Senate approves proposal for Loma Miranda National Park
SANTO DOMINGO. With only the abstention by the representative of the province of Monsignor Nouel, Felix Maria Nova, the Senate approved and made into law the proposal which declares Loma Miranda a National Park.

Senators from 28 provinces and the National District raise their hands in favor of the legislative proposal, which was declared to be urgent, and heard in two consecutive readings, in a session preceded by protests and demonstrations in different parts of the country in favor of the initiative.

The proposal was introduced yesterday to the Senate, after its approval on Tuesday by the Chamber of Deputies. The legislative proposal is now pending its signing and publication by the Executive Power.

Debate

After being declared urgent, which was requested by Sen. Euclides Sanchez - PLD representative from La Vega, the province where Loma Miranda is located - and it's reading, the debates were opened and Sen. Nova reiterated his opposition to the initiative.

"The Senate has performed a patriotic role in the manner in which it has handled this proposal," said Sanchez who spoke before Nova.

After congratulating the Senate president, Cristina Lizardo, who yesterday presided over her first session after her election, Nova said that his position against the declaration of the protected area for Loma Miranda did not respond "to hatred," but rather the fact that he has to be coherent with the population that he represents, and he assured the Senate that thousands of persons will lose their jobs over the closure of the mining project which would have been developed in the area by the company Xstrata Nickel of Falcondo.

"Loma Miranda Park harms the future of Monsignor Nouel," he noted.

He added that now what is important is to discuss how to maintain the protected areas, which he said represent - including Loma Miranda - 26% of the national territory.

"I respect the position of the Senate, and I know that you also understand our role," he declared.

Also taking part in the debate were Senators Adriano Sanchez Roa, the spokesman for the PLD senators, Amable Aristy Castro, Charles Mariotti, Prim Pujals and Heinz Vieluf. They all supported the approval of the proposal.
