One fatality in shipwreck of attempt to reach Puerto Rico

UVERO ALTO, HIGÜEY. The body of a dead woman was recovered and another 20 persons are still missing after a small craft overturned with 22 Haitian and Dominican immigrants who were trying to reach Puerto Rico in a fragile small craft.

The boat of some 20 feet in length and made of fiberglass and wood overturned some four nautical miles from the beach at Uvero Alto, in the province of La Altagracia.

The victim was identified by police authorities as Charite Valesco, 46, who lived in Higüey.

The Dominican Armada and brigade workers from Civil Defense in Bavaro and Higüey, suspended the search for victims or possible survivors after 7:15 p.m. last evening and will resume today at 7:00 a.m.

The body was transferred to the morgue of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Hospital, from where it was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, in the Antonio Musa Hospital in San Pedro de Macoris.

Fishermen that work in the area known as "the throw away" close to the Mona Passage, managed to rescue the body of the woman and a survivor who was detained at the police station in Uvero Alto, according to Major Juan Taveras.
