Prosecutors on strike tomorrow over salaries

They say low salaries cause prosecutors to abandon the judicial career

SANTO DOMINGO. The prosecutors announced a work stoppage for tomorrow Tuesday in demand of a salary increase that they have been calling for over the last several months.

The announcement was made after a series of activities carried out by the movement which brings together these members of the Justice Department, and after nearly 5 months after President Danilo Medina promised to correct the salary discrepancy between prosecutors and judges. The movement "Dignity for the Justice Department of the Dominican Republic" says that they have information that the authorities intend to leave the 2015 budget "exactly the same as was granted to the Justice Department during the last three years," which was RD $3.3 billion, when they should have RD $8.8 billion, according to Law Number 194 - 04 regarding Budgetary Autonomy.

"The hope which we have all been harboring is that for January 2015 our situation as public servants will improve, but this has gone up in smoke," they complained.

The demonstration is programmed to start at 8:00 in the morning and end at 11:00 a.m.

"We are preparing to carry out our first work stoppage at the national level, in front of the Palace of Justice of each Judicial District wearing our caps and gowns," says the movement "Dignity for the Justice Department of the Dominican Republic." The prosecutors are calling for, besides a "competitive" salary, that it should correspond to the pay scale of the justice system, among other demands.
