SDSS has 47,000 micro companies registered

It is a reflection of the economy of the country, where 70% of businesses are micro

SANTO DOMINGO. As of June 2014, in the Dominican System of Social Security (SDSS) there were registered 47,298 micro businesses, defined as those that have a maximum of 15 employees.

As of that month, these companies had 177,604 employees affiliated to the SDSS, which represents an increase of 28% in relation to the number registered two years before, in 2012. Likewise during those 24 months the number of micro companies registered in the SDSS, increased 32.2%, by adding another 11,517. The Law 488 - 08 that regulates the Micro, Small and Medium Companies (Mipymes), defines the micro companies as those, formal or informal, that have a number of between one and 15 workers, and that have assets valued at less than three million pesos.

Registered in the SDSS, the Mipymes altogether number a little more than 60,600 companies, with the micro companies representing more than 77% of this amount. The large companies, which are defined as those that have more than 200 employees, barely total as little more than 400, and provide 47% of the affiliates according to the statistics published by the National Council of Social Security (CNSS).

The statistics reflect the reality of the Dominican economy, where the greatest number of companies are those of the smallest size.

According to the Company Directory for 2010, published by the National Office of Statistics, 70 of each 100 Dominican companies are micro, and many of them are informal.

The numbers indicate that 23% are small businesses and 3.2% are medium-size businesses. Barely 3.5% have more than 100 employees.
