Attorney General does not think Haitians are armed in the Dominican Republic

He says that the incident had access from both sides

SANTO DOMINGO. The Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, rejected the idea that at a general level the Haitians are armed in this country.

"Neither with a legal permit or in a general sense," he noted, in answer to a question regarding the warning from the Minister of Interior and Police, José Ramon but who, that all the Haitians that possessed illegal weapons would be disarmed of their firearms or knives.

The official referred to the incident at the 27 February barrio where a Haitian was killed during an incident, saying "there occurred a regrettable incident, where apparently there was an excess and police abuse, and where also there was an inadmissible abuse against authority by a group of persons." He said that these persons took actions that are not tolerated in a state of law.

"This is to say, that there were two mistakes, two violations of the law and both have to be punished, this is my position."

Dominguez Brito said that they could never permit stones to be thrown at the authorities.

But also, he revealed the existence of information regarding an alleged "toll" (a Dominican euphemism for payoffs) and extortion by police agents.

He feels that this is a serious problem to which attention must be paid. "What they are talking about is that a policeman was asking them for money and abused a little bit, let us say, his authority," he noted for the reporters.

Equally, he added that according to the autopsy and preliminary information, there were excesses.

Disarmament

The Police ordered its intelligence agents to try and identify the Haitians that are carrying illegal arms in the 27 February barrio, where last Saturday a second Lieutenant from the police killed a Haitian. The police spokesman, Colonel Jacobo Mateo Moquete, said that this work started several days ago and will continue as long as necessary in this sector under discussion.
