SANTO DOMINGO. The Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, called the house arrest which the Vatican imposed on the former Nuncio in the country, Jozef Wesolowski, who is accused of pederasty, "an act of justice."

"We wish to stress the importance which for the Dominican Republic this punishment signifies," he said.

The official said that crimes such as those attributed to the former Dean of the diplomatic corps merit drastic punishment.

Dominguez Brito emphasized the collaboration of the Attorney General with the Vatican state as well as Polish authorities, in the investigation process regarding the abuse of minors.

He said that according to what is established by the Vienna Convention, the process will take place in the Vatican.

He said that the collaboration of the Dominican State and the Vatican led to the decision against Wesolowski.

He recalled that all of the documents requested were sent overseas, where a judge of Instruction from the Vatican collected the evidence.

"If it is necessary, there will be a presence of the Justice Department on any scenario, both in this as well as any other case such as that of Poland."

Francisco "did it right"

In the meantime the Bishop of the diocese of La Vega, Monsignor Antonio Camilo, declared that the Vatican acted correctly by ordering the house arrest of the former Papal Nuncio.

"Pope Francis did the right thing and I ask God to continue illuminating him and bless him always so that we have him for a long time," she said as he answered questions regarding the arrest ordered by the Vatican against Wesolowski.

Regarding an eventual extradition of the former Nuncio to the country so that he can answer for the charges against him, he said that the authorities should act according to the laws that are in force.

In the Vatican

The trial against the former Nuncio for alleged sexual abuse of minors and possession of child pornography materials will begin probably at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2015, reported yesterday the Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi. This penal process needs that "comprehensible discretion," said Lombardi, the day after the news of the detention of the former nuncio, now under house arrest, was released,
