Nurses at the Arturo Grullon Hospital begin indefinite strike

SANTIAGO. The nurses at the Doctor Arturo Grullon Regional Children's Hospital began yesterday a labor stoppage for an indefinite time, in demand of equipment and supplies for the state run center.

Although they admitted having received the money that they requested in payment for work incentives, the nurses reported that this strike now is for the authorities of the Ministry of Public Health to deliver the supplies and equipment that the Arturo Grullon Hospital needs.

"It is true that they paid us the money that we called for from SENASA, but now this work stoppage is for an indefinite time and is in demand of equipment and supplies," said Altagracia Guzmán, who served as the spokeswoman for the movement.

She said that the demands of the nurses are backed by some doctors, but they remain anonymous in order to avoid reprisals.

Among the equipment that the nurses of the Arturo Grullon are calling for are tomography machine, a ventilator, the repair of the equipment of the X-ray Department and the supply of sufficient plaster, oxygen and the biochemical products used in the department of Laboratories.

Since last week, the nurses at the Doctor Arturo Grullon Children's Hospital carried out work stoppages which affected principally surgeries that were programmed as well as selective.

It is estimated that up until now, more than 85% of the operations have been suspended, resulting in dozens of patients and the families of these patients being affected.

For her part, the director of the Medical Ctr., Doctor Rosa Morel, reported that until further advice, they have to handle themselves with the scarcities of the hospital, and she said that the problems got worse after they eliminated the recovery quota (co-pay), which provided the Arturo Grullon Hospital with 2 million pesos each month.
