A strike by the ADP affected classes in Santiago

The strike was for 24 hours. They demanded appointment of teachers to work Extended School Day

SANTIAGO. The Dominican Association of teachers (ADP), in Santiago carried out a 24-hour strike yesterday in protest of the appointment of new professors to teach in the Extended Session Program.

The work stoppage was decided during an assembly carried out last Friday by the ADP in the province of Santiago, after the educational authorities failed to comply with their promise of appointing the teaching personnel who began working during the 2014-2015 school year, and who have still not received payment for the work carried out.

Miguel Jorge, the secretary for union education, said that with the moment obtain ES suspension of teaching they are trying to get the Minister of Education, Carlos Amarante Baret, to react in the face of the need to fulfill their obligations with the new teachers by paying for their work of teaching the boys and girls.

As part of the protest, the ADP members did not teach classes during any of the sessions.

Also, the union complained that the professors that did not belong to the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), are not being favored with appointments to the administrative positions in the new schools, whose jobs were decided through competition, leaving outside dozens of educators who were winners of the competition.

"We support the proper appointments, but we reject the appointments for political issues, which have been done without taking into account the winners of the competition the Ministry of Education itself carried out," said the union leader.

The ADP warned that if the professors are not paid for work carried out in the next few days, they will take more drastic actions.
