Drivers blocked traffic on the Hermanos Patiño Bridge
SANTIAGO. Dozens of urban transportation and intercity drivers in Santiago halted traffic for more than two hours on various city streets in a demand that the municipal and national authorities immediately repair the streets, avenues and rural roads.

From 9 o'clock in the morning until 11 o'clock, drivers of urban transportation, send me urban and rural units place their vehicles on the President Antonio Guzmán, and the Circunvalacion avenues and the Del Sol and 16 August streets which halted normal the take it or traffic on these roads in the city center.

Carrying signs and with drums, the drivers marched along the streets of Del Sol, Cuba, Sanchez and Restauracion until they returned to their starting point, which was the Hermanos Patiño Bridge, calling for the repair of the streets and a reduction in fuel prices.

"We are tired of words and promises, we want our streets to be paved now," was one of the slogans that could be read on the signs of the protesters.

Juan Marte, the president of the National Central of Transportation Workers (CNTT) which is organizing this type of public protest, threatened to call a regional strike for an indefinite period, if the Ministry of Public Works and the Mayor of Santiago do not attend their demands.

"It is regrettable and sad to say that at four years since this city administration took office, we now have more potholes than before and are drivers cannot put up with this situation anymore," underlined Marte.

He said that the drivers are practically working to cover the expenses of fuel and the purchase of parts for their vehicles which are damaged every day because of the poor condition of the roads.

During their protests, the drivers were closely watched by police patrols, but there were no incidents. AMET agents tried to unravel the traffic jams in the area,
