MONTECRISTI. The Director General of Livestock intervened in the province of Montecristi where over the last month 300 pigs have died as the result of a disease which has the symptoms of the "Teschen", a disease present in Haiti, according to Bolivar Toribio, the director general of Livestock.

The symptoms the pigs present are tremors and high temperatures, which causes the death within a few minutes, similar to the plate which is present in the neighboring country.

Doctor Toribio pointed out that the Department of Livestock is waiting for the results of some samples sent to the specialized laboratory in the United States in order to obtain the definitive confirmation of the diagnosis, which showed positive to the virus cited above.

"The test of the pigs were caused by the disease known as Teschen, present in Haiti for several years and that has caused the death of many pigs in that country," indicated the official.

Eight technical team headed by the director of Livestock, visited the producers affected in the communities of Salomon Jorge, Cristo Rey, Francisco Javier, Albinar, Las Flores, Guatapanal, Las Rosas, Villa García, Kilometer 11 and 12, El Copey, Aviacion, Judea, Nueva Judea, Los Conucos and Los Maestros, where they vaccinated 2008 teen takes against the Classic Pork Peste, benefiting 430 producers.

Toribio assured reporters that with the operation carried out they would control the disease, so that he called on the pig farmers to trust in the measures that the state institution has taken.

"The pork sector can have the security and confidence that our team of technicians is working to solve the situation and because of this the technical team has been strengthened in Montecristi with field support personnel from Dajabon and Santiago Rodriguez," he said.

In order to strengthen the security measures along the Dominican - Haitian frontier, they public official indicated that the institution could impose a barrier or impediment from Montecristi to Pedernales in order to avoid that the porcine virus enters into other provinces of the Dominican Republic.
