Minister of Health calls for great alliance to improve health care
SANTO DOMINGO. The new Minister of Public Health, Altagracia Guzmán Marcellino, suggested yesterday a strategic alliance of all the sectors related to the health sector in order to improve public health in the country.

Interviewed after being sworn in by President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace, the official said that there is only one way to do things and it is to work morning, noon and night.


Among the sectors that she mentioned in order to establish a strategic alliance are: the Dominican Medical College, the nurses unions, the pharmaceutical laboratories and products, the owners of the private clinics, the leadership of different boards, among others.

She indicated that the way is to work altogether so that the Dominican Republic has better health.

Guzman Marcellino said that Decree 379 - 14 issued by President Danilo Medina last week is the key to the process of separating functions in the public health system of the country. She said that this decree answers all the questions that can be asked in order to improve the health care system and she will work full-time for the development of the health of the Dominicans.

When she was asked about the situation at the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital, she said that she prefers to talk about positive things and that the decree that decentralizes the functions is an answer to the problems of the sector.

The Minister of Health emphasized that she was going to work on the prevention of diseases. Guzmán Marcellino, after being sworn in met with President Danilo Medina in his office.

What the President wants

President Danilo Medina expressed to her his hope that the team of the health sector appointed by him provides a solution to all of the problems of the sector in the country in order that all of the poor in the Dominican Republic receive health benefits.

A survey

After being sworn in yesterday by President Danilo Medina, the new director of the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital, José Miguel Ferreras, announced that today at 9:00 in the morning he would meet with the Chiefs of the different services and other officials at the hospital, in order to carry out a survey of the situation of the health center and deal with the problems that are affecting it.

"We will see what the situation is in order to immediately request all of the support that is necessary and remove the problems of the hospital, and so guarantee health for all of the infantile population," he said.

He said that President Medina guaranteed all of his support in this process. Doctor José Miguel Ferreras is a doctor trained at the Robert Reid Cabral Hospital, where he had worked for 26 years. Lately he was at the National Health Insurance (Senasa).

He said that he is returning to the Robert Reid Cabral to put all of his knowledge and efforts towards making sure that the children receive quality attention.
