Eight dead in traffic accident in Veron, Higüey

The crash occurred between a bus transporting hotel employees and the truck

SANTO DOMINGO. An accident last night between a bus which transported employees from a hotel and a stalled truck loaded with sand left a total of eight persons killed and 17 injured at kilometer 16 on the Veron Highway in Higüey, in the province of La Altagracia.

The dead and injured work at the Dreams Hotel, in Cabeza de Toro, and they were traveling in the bus with a license plate Number I 027924. The bus was a blue Hyundai.

The victims were identified as Salvador Terrero, Vladimir Rodríguez, Carlos Manuel, Rafael Hubiera, Juan Alcántara, Pedro Vásquez and two women identified as Dante and Liz Torres.

One of the dead had not been removed from the bus at 9:00 at night yesterday, according to Captain Douglas Borrel of the Military and Police Highway Safety Commission of the Ministry of Public Works.

Borrel explained that the collision occurred because the white dump truck, with no other information, was parked without any warning signals on the right-hand side of the road, and was rear-ended by the bus loaded with passengers. The tragic incident caused a traffic jam which extended for several kilometers in both directions of the Veron Highway.

Aid workers were obliged to use acetylene torches to cut away part of the body of the bus in order to be able to remove the bodies which were trapped inside.

Members of AMET, the National Police, Civil Defense, members of the Fire Department as well as medical personnel and paramedics from the tourist area participated in the rescue and recovery.
