Supreme Court wants a budget of RD $10.0 billion
SD. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) visited yesterday the Joint Commission on the Budget which is studying the legislative proposal for the law of income and expenditures of the state for next year. The Supreme Court demanded a budget assignment of some RD $10.0 billion.

Mariano German Mejia did not want to talk about the answers that the legislators gave him, but he said that he felt very good, "since he was among friends," when the reporters asked him about his smiling face as he left the meeting.

"I brought them a folder full of explanations. These are the basic needs. They heard me, we explained and we are going to see now what the answers are going to be," he commented without referring to the amount requested, which later was revealed by the chairman of the Commission, Senator Tommy Galan.

The high court was assigned the amount of RD $5.22 2 billion. The petition by German Mejia would signify an increase of 97.7% of what had been assigned.

Galan made it clear, however, that at the current phase the commission is only listening to the sector in order to then sit down to discuss and consider any decision to be taken. He recalled that some budget assignments requested by entities, could be consigned to other dependencies of the state, such as the case of the construction of projects, that appears in the budget assignments of the Ministry of Public Works and the OISOE.

Together with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the commission also received the director of the Office of the Public Defender, Laura Hernandez, who during her turn, asked that her budget be increased from RD $559 million to RD $815 million.

She said that the situation of this entity is nearly a state of collapse, due to the overload of work, the lack of defense lawyers, and that they are still missing two offices that should be open. The Dean of the Faculty of Judicial Sciences of the UASD, Antonio Medina Calcaño, joined in the claims by the Public Defender and requested an increase for this entity in the 2015 budget.

They will revise a mistake with the TC

Senator Galan said yesterday that the Commission might correct the "error" if it is this, in the assignment of a budget item of RD $200 million which was supposedly given to the Superior Electoral Tribunal, when this money was for the Constitutional Tribunal.
