VILLA TAPIA. Neighbors from several sections of the municipality of Villa Tapia lived moments of panic and anguish when last Friday a strong tornado struck their communities, destroying some roofs in its path and causing damage of over 7 million pesos to the farm crops.

David Toribio, a farmer in the section of El Coco Uno, described the big black clouds formed in the sky and then later "came the rains the lightning and thunder." "Then came the water, the thunder and the lightning that destroyed everything," Toribio noted.

However, this same situation was experienced by dozens of farmers in the sections of El Coco Dos, Coco Centro, as well as Las Jayas and in the section of El Caimito, part of the municipality of San Francisco de Macoris.

Ramona Guzmán said that she was washing dishes in the patio when a lightning bolt struck and killed a little cat by the name of Minina. "When I went back outside to the patio, I found the little cat all stiff," said doña Ramona Guzmán.

In addition to the hundreds of tareas of plantains that were knockdown by the tornado, dozens of palm trees, coconut, avocado and citrus trees were also destroyed.

The farmers of the region complained that the technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture only asked them about what they have planted; they don't take them any sort of help, either before or after the harvests.

In this community it is estimated that the damage by the recent tornado, something that is not frequent, added up to over 7 million pesos.

Pascual Toribio, another farmer who lost 80 tareas, said that he was ruined. He regretted that now he could not pay the money which he had taken in a loan in order to plant the crop. Yesterday some farmers were found in their farms repairing the damage that the tornado caused last weekend.
