Senate passes extension of deadline for naturalization

The deadline which ended last Tuesday, 28 October, will now be 28 January 2015

SD. The Senate passed into law the proposal which extends for 90 days the deadline foreseen for the processes related to the special regime of naturalization, established by Law 0169 - 14, for persons born in the Dominican territory who were irregularly registered in the Civil Registry.

The deadline, which originally ended last Tuesday, 28 October, will now be next 28 January.

The legislation was approved in two consecutive readings, after being declared urgent. In the first reading it received the favorable vote of 13 to 17 Senators who were present, and in the second reading it was passed by 17 of the 18 Senators present.

Senator Dionis Sanchez (Pedernales) issued a negative vote.

"The desire is to maintain the faucet open," he said that he thought that this extension will permit the entry of hundreds of Haitians citizens across an "unprotected frontier."

Last Tuesday, the day of the deadline, the proposal by the Executive was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in a unanimous vote. As of that day some 3013 requests for normalization had been presented.
