Las Terrenas returns to calm after riots
There was a meeting between representatives of organizations and the government

LAS TERRENAS, SAMANA. Calm returned yesterday afternoon to the town of Las Terrenas, which was shaken by violent protests which resulted in two deaths and dozens of arrests in a conflict between two businessmen for the control of the supply of electricity to the locality.
An official commission, composed of officials in high ranking police and military officers, managed to achieve a cooling-off period of 48 hours-two days- with the leaders of popular and community organizations, in order for the Superintendency of Electricity to provide a solution to the conflict. Relatives of the second victim of the protest, had previously walked through the streets with the casket containing the body of young Cesareo de Gracia, demanding justice for the police agents, who according to them caused the death.
The other victim was young Benjamin Castillos, 26, who died when a tree they were cutting to block the roads as part of the protests fell on him. In addition to the police and military officers, and of the Superintendency of Electricity, the deputy minister of Tourism, Fausto Fernandez, also took part in the meeting along with the public relations director of the entity, Napoleon de la Cruz. Commercial establishments that had remained with their doors closed for several days, began last night to operate.
The municipality of the Las Terrenas is one of the most visited in the province by hundreds of local and international tourists. Due to the riots the majority of the hotels were nearly empty.
