Fare reductions go into effect starting today

Passengers greet agreement between OTTT and syndicates

SD. Yraira Benjamin travels on Mondays and Tuesdays from La Romana to Santo Domingo to attend bio-analysis classes at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

"There are students like me, that travel two days of the week to study. Others travel every day. It would be a really favorable measure if they really reduce the fares. I spend 180 pesos for each trip," the young student said to Diario Libre.

The same as her, persons consulted yesterday in bus terminals, that were going to study, work or do medical and personal errands in several points of the country, favored the announcement by the Technical Office of Ground Transportation (OTTT), after reaching an agreement with the transportation syndicates, which starting today will produce reductions in the price of fares in public transportation. These reductions will be RD $5.00 in the urban routes and between RD $10 and RD $20 on the intercity routes, where buses that use subsidized diesel fuel operate.

"It is important that they have realized that for us, the citizens who travel every day, the poor masses, and they reduced our fares," commented Francisco Santana, who was getting ready to leave the terminal of La Romana on the periphery of Duarte Avenue.

In order to move from Santo Domingo to Higüey, in order to work, Wilson Solis has to spend RD $275 for each trip. "This reduction will be as savings for those of us who works so far away," he said.

Victor Marmolejos, a fellow bus traveler with Wilson, feels that the measure was necessary, "because the price of the fares is very dear, and the situation is very difficult."

Passengers that were found at the bus stop in the municipality of Sabana de la Mar, agreed that the reduction in the cost of fares should have been carried out weeks ago.

Wellington Padilla, who on his free days as a private security person in the National District, travels to the city to visit his relatives, indicates that instead of paying RD $250, he should pay RD $200. "It is very expensive," he added.

At the same time, passengers of city routes in minibuses and cars, hope that tomorrow they will be charged 5 pesos less.

Onelia Reyes, who goes from kilometer 9 to the Pantoja municipal district, and Anabel Perez, who goes to Duarte Avenue, stated that "this is fair."

It will be recalled that the OTTT said last Monday that the price of fares was coordinated with the transportation businessmen : Arsenio Quevedo, the president of UNATRAFIN; Antonio Marte, the president of CONATRA; Ramon Perez Figuereo, the president of the C NTU; Freddie Mendez, the president of the Union of Bus Owners; Juan Marte, the President of the CNTT; and Gervasio de la Rosa, the President of Fetranreno.

In the meantime the New Option National Transportation Federation (Fenatrano), has still not established its position regarding this agreement, and passengers that use the bus routes of the syndicate are asking why it has not joined the agreement.
