Transportation companies lower fares between cities
On city routes decision has not been communicated

SANTO DOMINGO. Buses on intercity urban routes began to apply yesterday fare reductions of RD $10 and RD $25 on the cost of a ticket, after the driver syndicates agreed to such a measure with the Technical Office of Ground Transportation (OTTT).
During a trip around different bus terminals at kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway, and the periphery of Duarte Avenue, reporters found the price reduction of the fares for transportation to provinces of the country.
Fares from Santo Domingo to San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana, Nagua, San Francisco de Macoris, Santiago, Sabana de la Mar and other places were reduced by RD $10.00.
"A substantial reduction in the fare between Santo Domingo and Higüey of RD $25 pesos has been made," communicated the manager of the Higüey terminal. This is to say that now passengers will pay RD$250 instead of RD$275.
"I see this as very good, because it is an advance. This is 25 pesos less. A round-trip ticket is now 50 pesos less," expressed Francesca Reyes, from Higüey.
Apolinar Tolentino, a driver who carries passengers to La Romana, feels that the government should continue lowering the price of fuel, so that-he said-they can reduce fare costs even more.
One of his passengers, Orlando Payan, commented: "with the cost the fuels have on the international market, a more substantial reduction should be made for the clients. Ten pesos is very little."
A trip between Santo Domingo and Nagua cost RD$300, and now it is RD $290. From Santo Domingo to Santiago, the cost was now RD$240 now instead of RD$250. The trip between Santo Domingo and La Vega the longer costs RD$200, but rather RD$190.
On the route between Santo Domingo and Moca a passenger used to pay RD$225, and since yesterday the only pays RD$215. The same prices apply for the Santo Domingo to San Francisco de Macoris route.
Drivers agreed that a fair reduction was necessary. Nonetheless some other drivers on intercity routes, although they accepted the measure, did not share the decision, saying that tires and oil for their vehicles are very expensive.
In the meantime, drivers of city routes said that they had still not received communication regarding the fair reduction.
Fenatrano still has not set position
The OTTT said last Monday that the fare prices were coordinated with the transportation businessmen: Arsenio Quevedo, the president of UNATRAFIN; Antonio Marte, the president of CONATRA; Ramon Perez Figuereo, the president of the C NTU; Freddie Mendez, the president of the Union of Bus Owners; Juan Marte, the President of the CNTT; and Gervasio de la Rosa, the President of Fetranreno. In the meantime the New Option National Transportation Federation (Fenatrano) has still not set its position in this regard.
