Patient transfer begun from Luis E Aybar Hospital to allow demolition
SANTO DOMINGO. Starting today, consultation, hospitalization, emergency, surgery and the majority of the administrative services at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital will be shut down. This is the first step in order to begin the process of demolition and the construction of new installations at an estimated cost of RD $7.0 billion.

The announcement was made yesterday by the director of the Metropolitan Health Region, Felix Hernandez, in the presence of the directors of the other health centers which make up the Ciudad Sanitaria, located in the Maria Auxiliadora section of the capital.

Hernandez explained that between the 15th and 20th of this month the hospital has to be completely emptied in order to be handed over to the Supervisory Office of State Projects (OISOE), who are in charge of the construction of the new hospital.

It is estimated that the construction process will last 2 years so that they expect that the medical activities will be reopened before August 2016.

In spite of the problems which for years have affected the medical center and network constantly reported, the repairs to which it has undergone, including the construction of an emergency room a little over 5 years ago, this is the first time in 68 years that the iconic medical center will stop providing service to the people.

Fernandez guaranteed that no patient will be deprived of receiving medical attention, because the measures contemplate a plan for the relocation of the principal services which the hospital offers.

From now on, the Burn Unit and the pediatric residence program will function in the Ney Arias Lora Trauma Hospital and in the Hugo Mendoza Pediatric Hospital, located on Charles de Gaulle Avenue, in North Santo Domingo.

Internal Medicine will be transferred to the Padre Billini, Salvador B Gautier and Francisco Moscoso Puello hospitals, while the maternity and neo-natal units will go to the latter hospital (Moscoso Puello) the same as the units for Diabetic Feet, Dialysis and Rheumatology.

Surgery will take place in the Vinicio Calventi Hospital in Los Alcarrizos.

Maternity patients who need attention will also be able to consult in units prepared for this at the Los Mina, and La Altagracia maternity hospitals, the Reinaldo Almanzar Hospital, in Villa Mella and in the centers for secondary level of attention that belong to the Metropolitan Health Region.

The authorities say they have prepared special areas in these different hospitals in order to attend the demand of the new patients.

The new buildings which will be put up in the area will include 2 new hospitals, a maternal child (MCH) unit and a general hospital, as well as a building for outpatient care and teaching.

For the last week at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital, only patients with appointments have been received.

The hospital director, Manuel Mendez, said that the area with the greatest demand is maternity, where yesterday there were 25 patients. The pregnant women that attend consultations are being given their records and a referral to one of the maternity centers registered above.

It will be the most modern in the country

The authorities promise that the Ciudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar will be the most modern in the country with new buildings that will consist of a modern complex that is to include 2 new hospitals one MCH and the other a general hospital, as well as a building for outpatient care and teaching in a group which will provide 600 beds to the national health system.

The statistics of the hospital register more than 22,000 consultations a year, more than 3000 hospitalizations per quarter and different pathologies.
