SD. The Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Maximo Muñoz Delgado, assured reporters yesterday that motivated by the Christmas season, the frontier with Haiti was reinforced with 1800 new troops.

The increase in the number of troops he said was due to the possible increase in the flow of immigrants which comes about during these festive days.

"The frontier is protected; we have increased the number of troops, so that at this stage of the year during which we all know that many Haitians are going to cross over during these Christmas festivities with their families."

In another order, the Minister of Defense announced the arrest of a Haitian citizen who, together with four compatriots, had attacked a member of the Army for the purpose of stealing his weapon.

The incident occurred in the community of La Vigia, in Dajabon. Nonetheless, he did not reveal the name of the person arrested nor of the military person who was attacked.

Christmas Operation

Muñoz Delgado said that, as part of the operation of Quiet Christmas which began last week, the Ministry of Defense sent some 2800 of their own troops to patrol the streets, in combination with members of the National Police. In this sense, he defended the presence of the soldiers in the different streets of the capital city. He recalled that the work that the troops carry out is done at the request of the police, who are the coordinators of the operation.
