The new PUCMM rector criticizes fundamentalism in the abortion debate
SFM. The new rector of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), Father Ramon Alfredo de la Cruz Baldera, said that he felt that the proper answer regarding the observations of the Penal Code which is being debated in the National Congress, should be the result of a dialogue between science, faith and reason.

Likewise, he said he felt that in the treatment of the issue "a lot of fundamentalism is coming forth," and that "this does not lead to anywhere, not in politics, not in economics and not in religion."

He said that this fundamentalism comes about "when Pope Francis is saying everything to the contrary." "Let us help the Pope to open ourselves as a renovated church, that will be the motive and the motor that will lead to a new society," he said.

Transformations

With respect to the challenges that the Catholic Church is facing at the present time and the scandals which open it to questioning, De la Cruz Baldera feels that this institution "is living a marvelous moment at the present time."

"I am happy to live at this moment of the Church. The conflicts and scandals are a manifestation of getting better," he added.

To his way of seeing things, "the man of faith finds light in that which is supposedly a failure and I am sure that the Church will come out stronger from all of these conflicts and will shine with a new light."

With regard to the acceptance of homosexuals in the Church, the new rector of the PUCMM, who will take office next 15 January, said that "in the acceptance of differences in others is the peace" and in this sense, he said he would take the same position as Pope Francis.

"You have to see each person as a human being, help them in his difficulties, and accept his differences, since what is important is the human heart," he declared, as he was interviewed in his office at the Northeast Catholic University (UCNE), where he is still the rector and is preparing for his transfer to the PUCMM.

Father De la Cruz Baldera was approved by the Vatican as the rector of the PUCMM for a period of 4 years, in substitution of Monsignor Agripino Nuñez Collado, who carried out that function for 44 years. In addition De la Cruz Baldera is the president of the Dominican Association of University Rectors (ADRU).
