Leonel: The PLD has already created three Republics
SANTO DOMINGO. The President of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Leonel Fernandez, assured reporters that this organization has created three republics, in reference to the riches of the country, due to what according to him, has tripled its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), from US $19 billion in 2004 to US$62 billion over the last 10 years.

"In terms of wealth generation, the PLD has created three Dominican Republics in the period during which we have governed," he said. Fernandez talked about some of the achievements of the governments of the PLD such as the modernization of the Justice Department, the transparency of the state through tenders and competitions, and the reduction of poverty.

The former President stressed that the PLD is the only party which came up from a third-place to become the principal political organization and that the most successful party in the political history of the country.

He said that for 2016 the organization is on the road to obtain a 6th electoral victory, but based on its unity.

He said that the Constitution which was promoted by the PLD in 2010 "provides the Dominican people tranquility in the first place by knowing who are Dominicans, because the issue of nationality is vital for a country such as ours."

He indicated other achievements of this Constitution were gender equality and the reform of the Judicial Power.

Fernandez spoke during the activities celebrating the 41st anniversary of the founding of the PLD, and the re-inauguration of the party's National House after it was remodeled.

"When the PLD arrived in government the talk was about government projects being distributed through personal relationships, but under the PLD the projects are awarded after international public tenders that are not questioned in any part of the world," he explained.

Absentees

President Danilo Medina did not attend the act, in spite of his attendance being on the program, nor did another 12 members of the 35 that belong to the Political Committee.

Medina was applauded for nearly a minute when the secretary of communications, Hector Olivo, presented his excuses.

Neither were the Vice President of the Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez, or the aspiring presidential candidates Temistocles Montas and Radhames Segura in attendance. It was reported that 80% of the 635 members of the Central Committee were in attendance, occupying the new large hall of the National House which was constructed for party meetings such as this.
