Residents of the barrios say there are no patrols
SANTO DOMINGO. The inhabitants and merchants of five popular Barrios of the capital complained that the Police are only patrolling in the center of the city, along the main arteries and commercial centers, such as the big commercial plazas and around the commercial banks.

Merchant Roberto de la Cruz, from the Guachupita sector complained that "they left the barrios without protection in order to take the police to other places, such as Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Santiago and other cities and sectors."

In fact, the day when the program began, Diario Libre spoke with at least five policemen, of a group of 200, that were waiting for a bus that would take them to La Romana and in their pockets they only had RD$1000 pesos each.

In this group, they were all were from the capital and other towns that were going to the city (of La Romana) to reinforce security during Christmas time. Only two patrols, one on motorcycles and the other in a pickup truck, were seen at the entrance to the Espaillat barrio, during a trip which lasted more than an hour around the city.

Cleric Alfredo González, a resident in Gualey, issued a call to the chief of Police to order a "good number of agents that would provide us with security too; we are also people."

On Monday during a press conference offered in his office, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo denied that the Police are not patrolling in the Barrios.

However, the police presence is noticeable all along Duarte, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Naco, Piantini, and other sectors where the "high-class people" live and walk.

"Look here comes a group of young people from other sectors and they take advantage of the lack of patrols in order to assault businesses and girls that come from the University," said the housewife Abelarda Sanchez, a resident in 27 February barrio.
