Minister of Industry and Commerce asked for fuel price reductions to be transferred to products
SD. The Minister of Industry and Commerce, José Del Castillo Saviñon, said he was in agreement to carry out talks with different productive sectors of the country, such as been repeatedly demanded by merchants, with the object of producing a reduction in the prices of the goods and services that are sold in the national territory, as a result of lower fuel costs.

But, although Del Castillo sees talks with the industrial and commercial sectors as a positive, he considered that the people will be receiving reductions in the prices of different products through natural competition which comes about between the sectors, when the sectors reduce their production costs.

"But not only the industrialists, but also the farm sector, commerce and all the economic sectors that are receiving a considerable reduction in costs should transfer a portion of this to the population, to the consumer in a general sense," said the minister.

In addition, the official expressed that he has already made an important effort in the case of the transportation sector, where they have applied (on some routes) reductions in the prices of the fares, both in the capital as in the provinces.

The reduction in the prices of fuels which started some 6 months ago, has still not been reflected in the goods and services that are offered in the country, in spite of the different commercial and consumer groups who have been demanding that the fall in the cost of oil should also impact the basic family food basket.

Consumers and merchants consulted yesterday in the Mercado Nuevo on Duarte Avenue, said yesterday that the prices of products have been invariable and that contrary to lowering the prices, such as the fuel prices have been reduced, some products instead have increased their price, such as the case of beans and rice. "I was going to buy rice today, and I could not, because the supplier told me that they had increased the price RD$200 for the 125 pound bag," said Bienvenido Taveras, the owner of Casa Willy, which sells provisions inside the market

"I don't understand why food does not go down, because before, when they began to raise the prices they only said that they were raising the prices because gasoline was very expensive, and now that the gasoline is cheaper the prices don't come down," said Bethania Baez, while she shopped in the Market.

Taking advantage of low crude prices

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, José Del Castillo Saviñon, said that, although the issue of oil purchases truly belongs to the Dominican Oil Refinery and the Dominican Corporation of State - owned Electricity Enterprises (CD EEE), now is the best time to buy crude oil futures and in this way take advantage of the low prices that exist at the present time on the international market. "Now there is a price situation which permits that permits us to do this," said the official.
