President will attend mass at 9:00 a.m. at the Basilica

SANTO DOMINGO. The feast day of the Virgin of La Altagracia is commemorated today throughout the country, with thousands of persons paying tribute in the Basilica in Higüey, along with the prayers of the Bishop of this diocese in order that the patron of this country intercedes with the authorities, so that they can resolve the problems of the nation.

The official acts are headed by President Danilo Medina, who will go to Higüey in order to attend a mass at 9:00 a.m. which will be offered by the provincial Bishop Gregorio Nicanor Peña. Since last Monday, thousands of the faithful have come from different parts of the country to pay tribute to the Virgin.

Peña indicated that the occasion is appropriate to put into the hands of the Almighty the dangers that stalk the world and especially the Dominican Republic.

"To call upon the Virgin to intercede before Jesus Christ for our problems, the difficulties that we have, such as crime, the lack of jobs and basic services, to intercede so that the authorities take care to resolve those problems that affect the Dominican people," noted the prelate.

He issued a call to the Catholic and Christian population to take part in the religious activities that honor La Altagracia.

The Bishop said that this week they have been celebrating 3 masses a day and a novena and that in addition to the mass with the presence of the President, at 4:00 p.m. they will hold the procession with the image of the Virgin through the streets of the town.

In the meantime, in the First Cathedral of America, there will be 2 masses today, one at 10:00 a.m. and another at 12:00 noon, with the last one being offered by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Nicolas De Jesus Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez. In the parish of La Altagracia in the Colonial Zone there will be masses from 7:00 a.m., and the procession with the image of the Virgin will leave at 5:00 p.m. from the Cathedral and return to the Temple, where at 7:00 p.m. they will celebrate a Eucharistic service.

In a similar manner, there will be masses offered at all of the Catholic Church is in the country, as well as processions with the figure of the Virgin.

The highways security operation that will be carried out in coordination with the National Police has as its chief purpose the prevention traffic accidents, and to provide responses to any incident which occurs to drivers during the movement towards the Basilica of Higüey. The highway security operation will have more than 50 emergency positions on the highways and expressways of the East region.

They will also have similar operations in place on the Duarte Highway and on the 6 November Highway for which the agency charged with regulating traffic in the country has placed some 500 agents.

The initiative, coordinated by the COE, includes the distribution of dozens of ambulances at critical points and a helicopter that will cover the East region, in order to attend any situation which might present itself. These and other details will be offered by the COE in the next few hours.

In the meantime, the area surrounding the Basilica of Higüey and the nearby areas has a traffic control point with the objective of maintaining the flow of traffic and avoid congestions.
