Thousands ask the National Congress to reestablish reelection

Deputies of Danilo Medina say that 50% of this bloc supports residential reelection

SD. For the 3rd time thousands of persons congregated in the front part of the National Congress to ask the legislators to modify the Constitution in order to reestablish presidential reelection and permit President Danilo Medina to be re-nominated.

Abel Tejada, the president of the "The People Command" movement, served as the spokesman for the representatives of some 20 movements that attended the "protest." He said that there is time to modify the Constitution and he asked the legislators to place the issue on the agenda as soon as the next ordinary session opens on 27 February. He recalled that they came to the Congress to call the attention of the Senators and deputies regarding this issue and deposited documents with their petition on 18 September and last 6 November.

Enmanuel Navarro, the representative of a movement of businessmen with Danilo Medina, assured reporters that the request would not constitute "damage to the Fatherland" nor that it is an expression of fanaticism, nor of opportunism but rather of sensibility and logic.

Tejada, Navarro and a group of persons were received by Senator Rafael Calderon, who committed himself to carry the letter to the president of the Senate, Cristina Lizardo and the other senators.

Deputies Angel Ramirez (Rico), Frank Soto, Hugo Fortuna, and Tulio Jimenez came out to the front part of the Congress building in order to show their support. Ramirez said that 50% of the PLD bloc of deputies supports the presidential reelection.

In the meantime, Fortuna said he is sure that the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) will meet and accept "the feeling of the people which is shouting" for the re-nomination of Medina." While Jimenez said that there is time to reform the Constitution.

Also, there were nearly 100 motoconchos drivers who concentrated in front of the Presidential Palace in order to ask the President to accept the re-nomination.
